Steel Wolf

It also happened at that time that my comrades gave me my nickname, which is still attached to me today: Steel Wolf – Stahlwolf in German. Boredom can sometimes bear strange fruits, so in the countless hours of being on duty without any task I embellished with some paint an MG3 case that had been tossed out as scrap. As the motif I chose a predator mouth with fangs and eyes over it, like you’d see on airplanes. With fine brush strokes in red, white and black I painted it on the case. The shiny, heat-resistant varnish I used gave the object an almost martial appearance and reminded me of the muzzle of Disney's Big Bad Wolf.

On the steel cabinets behind the counter of the armory we always had an MG3 with the bipod folded out, which was never issued. To this weapon I mounted the embellished case. Unfortunately I neglected to photograph it, and don't know what happened to the piece. In any event, the embellished case made my comrades associate me with a steel wolf. Et voila, my nickname was born.
